1965 to 2015. Celebrating 50 Years of Handcrafting PaddlesGeneral - Jan 05, 2015
Martha Furrer, paddling with the very first Werner Paddle. 1965, Washington.
1945, Switzerland. A young Werner Furrer Sr. was first introduced to paddling as part of a physical fitness program offered by the Swiss army. 10 years later, now living in NY's Adirondack region, he and his young wife Martha purchased their first kayak which allowed a growing family fun on the water. In 1965 a growing family saw the need for more kayaks, but the latest aquistion came without a paddle. So here it began as it was off to the garage to design and handcraft the first Werner paddle. Today, 50 years later, we celebrate this milestone and how this moment in history forged the company we are today.
Over the next year we invite you to learn more about our history and the memories 50 years have made. Start by first visiting our ABOUT page. Here you will find our historic timeline that takes you from the beginnings, to the first paddle, through to today. Check out our Advanced Fit and Design pages and what goes into making a better paddling paddle. Beyond just the paddles, our history is about the adventures we lived, the ones you embark on today. Our Healthy Waters partners protect the places we paddle, see who we support.
Stay tuned to the “50 Years” section of our Blog to see historic photos, read interviews from those that took part, hear the stories, the memories that were made along the way.
