Werner Furrer Sr, 93, peacefully passed away on June 28th. Born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1927, he came to the United States via Canada when he and his future wife Martha eloped. He and Martha travelled around the United States, having children along the way, and finally settled in the Pacific Northwest first in Hoquiam and then in Everett.

After long conversations about everything paddling — teaching styles, equipment, environmental advocacy and the whitewater industry, Keith Miller decided it was time to pass the baton onto the next generation and felt that Melissa DeMarie and CWC was who it should go to.

Legislation has been introduced in the Washington State legislature that would require operators of all boats and vessels that are human-propelled (e.g. kayaks, canoes, rafts, stand up paddle boards) to possess a boater education card providing evidence of completing a boating safety education program.
